What is PIG detection and why do you need a PIG detector?

PIG detection is the process of identifying when a PIG (Pipeline Inspection Gauge) enters, passes through, or arrives at specific points in a pipeline. PIGs are essential tools used for cleaning, inspecting, and maintaining pipelines in both offshore and onshore environments.

A PIG detector - also known as a PIG signaller - is used to confirm the PIG’s movement in real time. This is critical for:

How the ClampOn DSP PIG Detector works

The ClampOn DSP PIG Detector uses passive ultrasonic acoustics to “listen” for the unique sound signature of a PIG moving through the pipeline. The sensor is clamped directly onto the pipe surface - no welding, drilling, or shutdown required. It detects all PIG types, including scrapers, spheres, foam and smart/intelligent pigs.

With DSP technology, the sensor operates across multiple frequency ranges simultaneously, filtering out background noise from flow, valves, and mechanical impacts. This ensures precise detection in oil, gas, and multiphase environments.

Detection logic can be handled either within the sensor or via ClampOn’s software, which enables:
